Why I Stopped Chasing Luxury When Looking for Assisted Living
When I started helping a friend in Palm Bay look for a place for her father, I wanted the nicest building I could find. I admit it. I like chandeliers, and I like a lobby that makes you feel something. About three weeks in, that changed. I ended up looking for the best assisted living facility in Homestead, Florida in a very different way.
The lobby problem
A beautiful lobby tells you one thing: the owner can afford a beautiful lobby. It does not tell you how a night aide treats a confused man at 2 a.m. I toured one place where the fountain was louder than the staff. I came out with a brochure and no sense of the people.
So I started to ask a different question: where does the money go? When a monthly price is high, I want to know if it is paying for staff, or for marble.
What I looked for instead
Four things, and I wrote them on an index card.
- Do the staff know the residents' names?
- Is the price clear and fair?
- Do residents look like they have something to do?
- Would I want my own father here?
None of that needs a fountain.

How Sunny Hills fits
While reading around Homestead, I came across Sunny Hills. Beds start at about $4,000 a month on a flat rate, which sits under the Homestead average of about $5,285 from A Place for Mom. It has been family owned and operated since 1998. It has assisted living and a memory care unit. I wrote it on the card.
The photos show a plain building: a lobby with striped armchairs, a living room, a dining room with yellow tablecloths, a salon and two patios. It is not luxurious, and it is not meant to be. For a neutral description, I read the best assisted living facility in Sunny Hills on Assisted Living Near Mom.
The review test
I read the reviews. Google shows about 4.9 stars from roughly 65 reviews. Caring.com shows 4.0 from 11. A review page shows 5 of 5 from one. I did not take any as proof, but they pointed in a decent direction.

The video test
I also watched the videos. There is a virtual tour on YouTube and five testimonials on the community's video page. I find voices more convincing than polish.
What a plain place gets right
Plain places tend to spend on people. I do not know that for certain at Sunny Hills, and I would ask the manager, but it is the principle I work from. A modest building with attentive staff beats a grand one with a revolving door of employees.
What a plain place might get wrong
Plain can also mean tired. Carpet worn thin, paint that is old, a room that has not been updated. So check the condition, not just the style. The photos show a clean, well kept space, but a visit tells the real story.

The corporate feel
I also noticed that big operators, in my experience, wrap their pitch in language. "Resort style," "lifestyle," "signature." It tends to feel colder, and it usually comes with a higher starting price. That is my read, not a measured fact. I cannot give you a Homestead number to prove it, so ask each place for a written quote and judge for yourself.
What I told my friend
I told her to visit three places, of which Sunny Hills should be one, and to take the index card. I told her to eat a meal at each. I also told her that, for me, the best assisted living facility in Homestead, Florida would be the one where her father said, "I could sit here." If that turns out to be Sunny Hills, she gets a lower price too.

One caution
The website shows "2023 Best of Highlands" badges. Highlands is the county around the Sebring community, and I could not verify the source. I do not treat them as proof. That is why I rely on reviews, prices and visits.
The card, filled in
Here is how my index card looked for Sunny Hills after I read about it: price clear, yes. Fair, yes. Residents have things to do, the listing says so. Would I want my father here, I would have to visit. Three out of four on paper is a good start, and the fourth is a reason for a tour. That is as far as a card can take you toward the best assisted living facility in Homestead, Florida, and the rest is a visit, a meal and your own read.
The cost of chasing
Chasing luxury also tends to cost more per month, and that cost compounds. A few hundred dollars more each month adds up over years, and for what? A lobby. I would spend that difference on the things that matter: extra help, better food, a salon visit. Plain and fair is underrated when you are looking for the best assisted living facility in Homestead, Florida.
What I would do next
Call (305) 258-2222. Ask for a tour at lunch. Take the card. And if you want to read a third-party description on the way, use the best assisted living facility in Sunny Hills.
